Title: Mathematics in Biology: The Human Genome Project and DNA Computing

Speaker: Lorne Walker, ACMS alum

Time: 3:30--4:30pm, Friday, March 7, 2003

Place: Thomson 134

Abstract:

In the last 100 years we have witnessed a revolutionary increase in our
understanding of the inner workings of biological organisms. At the
beginning of the 20th century the genetic nature of inheritance was just
being established and a mere 100 years later our deciphering of the
genetic code culminated with the dual publications of first-draft
sequences of the Human Genome in February of 2001. Mathematics and
computation have become invaluable tools for understanding biological
systems as the level knowledge and volume of data has increased. Now, at
the beginning of the 21st century the fields are inextricably linked. As
an illustration of the importance of mathematics in biology, I will talk
about the key role mathematics, statistics and computers played in the
sequencing of the Human Genome. Furthermore, as an example of the
importance of biology in mathematics, I will talk about a proposed method
for solving the Traveling Salesman Problems using a mixture of DNA
molecules: the construction of a so-called DNA computer.
