Course Description

Complementary course to 567 covering basic numerical techniques for interpolation, differentiation, integration, and solution of elliptic partial differential equations. Topics include Lagrange interpolation and finite-difference formulas, discretization and solution of elliptic PDEs, applied linear algebra, direct and iterative methods, Newton-Cotes integration.

Textbook

Singular Perturbations Theory, R.S. Johnson, Springer 2005.

A copy is on reserve in the Math Research Library and the library also has an ecopy that can be borrowed.

Homework

Students will be expected to do the assigned exercises (from Chapters 1-4 of the text).

Grades

Grades will be based on an in-class midterm and an in-class final exam. Copies of class notes will be distributed.
