UW Ranked 7 in Applied Math
Feb 7, 2007 - The Chronicle of Higher Education recently ranked UW's Applied Mathematics Department in the top 10 nationally. The Department was ranked 7th, in a ranking based almost exclusively on research productivity and visibility.
Nate Bottman awarded Freshman Medal
Dec 14, 2006 - Nate Bottman, an undergraduate researcher working with Bernard Deconinck, was awarded the Freshman Medal. This medal is awarded to the sophomore having the highest scholastic standing for the first year of his or her course. Nate is an honors student working towards degrees in mathematics and ACMS. His research is on an analytical study of the stability of the stationary solutions of the integrable Nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Nate was also recently awarded a Mary Gates Research Fellowship to work on this project.
2006 Boeing Award winners
May 31, 2006 - Each year the department recognizes the special achievements of some of our outstanding graduate students who demonstrate excellence in some aspect of their work. This year's Boeing Award winners are: Congratulations to all of them!
Josh Proctor wins Advanced Undergraduate Research Award and McNair Fellowship
October 7, 2005 - Joshua L. Proctor, an undergraduate student working under the direction of Prof. J. N. Kutz, has been awarded the prestigious McNair Fellowship and the Advanced Undergraduate Research Award. The McNair Fellowship covers tuition for the academic year 2005-2006 while the Advanced Undergraduate Award provides $5000 towards educational expenses. The awards are a results of a stellar academic record in addition to research on mode-locked laser systems which has resulted in four refereed journal articles. His recent work has been featured in the September edition of Photonics Spectra magazine as well as the Virtual Journal of Ultrafast Science. Josh is a double major in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering and English Literature. He is also an active participant in the Nonlinear Waves Research Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics.
Braxton Osting and teammates take top honors
July 14, 2005 - A team consisting of Ryan Bressler, Braxton Osting and Christina Polwarth took top honors in the Annual Mathematical Contest in Modeling, sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications. Braxton Osting is an ACMS undergraduate, doing research with J. Nathan Kutz. Braxton is also majoring in math, physics and minoring in environmental science. Braxton has accepted a graduate student fellowship to attend Columbia University starting this Fall. Campaign for students
May 17, 2005 - Good news! The university has lowered the minimum to establish a permanent endowment (which would earn interest) from $25K to $5K. Furthermore, it will be matched one to one up to $10K. Faculty, staff and retirees are eligible.

The endowment can be in the donor's name or in the name of a colleague or family member to be honored. The income can be used for graduate student fellowship, or for student program support (such as for travel, books, seminars, gatherings etc). A pledge can take up to 5 years to fulfill. More information can be found at https://devar.washington.edu/Toolkits/FSRCampaign/FSR%20Description%20and%20Q&A.pdf
"Establishing a permanent legacy at the UW that supports students in perpetuity is an act of exceptional generosity."

Katie Oliveras and Avanti Paranjpye receive Boeing Awards
April 21, 2005 - Katie Oliveras and Avanti Paranjpye received the departmental Boeing Award for excellence in research and service to the department. Previous recipients of the award include Yiyi Shi, Tim Reluga, Matt Patterson, Sarah Hewitt, Rafael Meza, David George, Damon Toth and William Heuett. The award carries with it a certificate and a stipend.
Firat Kiyak, Kyotaro Hemmi receive Mary Gates Research Scholarships
March 21, 2005 - Firat Kiyak, an undergraduate researcher working with Bernard Deconinck, was awarded a Mary Gates Research Scholarship. This will support his research work for three quarters. Firat is working on the implementation of Hill's method to compute spectra of linear operators. This is an important problem for the linear stability analysis of solutions of differential equations. Firat is a sophomore majoring in CSE. He will declare a second major in ACMS soon.

Kyotaro Hemmi, an undergraduate researcher working with Hong Qian, was also awarded a Mary Gates Research Scholarship. Firat and Kyotaro bring the number of Mary Gates scholars in the department to four. The others are Braxton Osting and Joshua Proctor, both working with Nathan Kutz.
