Abstract

This proposal describes activities that are supplemental to the activities of NSF grant ESIE, titled Creating a Community of Mathematics Learners (CCML). The thrust of the supplemental activities is towards providing disciplinary support for teachers in grades K-6 in the first year of adoption of exemplary curricular materials.

The supplemental work will be conducted by Loyce Adams and Ka Kit Tung in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington. This work will use graduate students in the role of math specialists to support a District's teachers (Northshore during the 1998-1999 year) in the math content as they enter their first year of the implementation of a newly adopted exemplary curriculum Everyday Mathematics. We are proposing to supplement the CCML Middle School budget which comes up for renewal August 31, 1998 with the attached budget. This supplemental budget is being matched by the University of Washington through a Tools for Transformation grant.

Based on the experience gained during the work proposed herein, we hope to extend the scope of the work to other participating school districts, as those districts move to the adoption of exemplary curricular materials. In particular, we aspire to continue this work for two or more additional years either through further supplements to CCML or as a part of a separate proposal currently being planned by CCML for grades K-6 and to be submitted in August 1998. The PIs of the present CCML project will work closely with K. K. Tung and Loyce Adams so that effective connections and compatibility will be established and maintained as we build on the activities that both partners have already undertaken.
