Abstract. Although there is solid evidence of the efficacy of cancer screening, the optimal screening strategy is a topic of constant debate. Using multistage carcinogenesis models, we construct mathematical expressions for the number and size distribution of premalignant lesions , e.g., aberrant crypt foci and polyps in colon and rectum, at any particular age. We use such expressions to evaluate the effects of different screening and intervention strategies in cancer risk.
