Abstract:
Global scale tsunamis are the most destructive natural disaster in the South Pacific and Japan. Although they are virtually undetectable in the deep ocean, specific coastal bathymetry can focus their energy into destructive inundation in often unpredictable ways.
The shallow water equations are a system of nonlinear PDEs often used to model various geophysical flows, such as tsunamis. I will describe a numerical method for the shallow water equations with this application in mind.
