this is mrs. curtis-davis and i in her classroom of 5th grade boys.
| I used to teach at thurgood marshall elementary in the GK-12 program. click on the picture to learn more about the program. the nuts and bolts of the job is helping out in a few classrooms at an elementary school in south seattle. mainly the program exists to help the school's students and teachers become better mathematics learners. From my end I learn a gob about what its like to teach (or some days 'teach') K-5th graders about math. the school is in an area that is low income and, before the program came, was doing poorly on the state issued tests. in the short years since the program started the pass rate in math for 4th graders has risen from 0% to somewhere in the high 50's. one thing that is somewhat unrelated to the job but needs to be said about the school is that many of the teachers there are heroes; absolutely amaizing people that i'm not likely to meet anywhere else. it is an honor just to know them, and at times i think this is a large part of why i like my job so much. of course the kids, for better or worse, but often times better, are also unforgettable. I am currently an RA so that i can focus more on research and getting my feet on the ground that way. |
